Acne, Scars & Rosacea

Acne

Acne occurs when skin pores (sebaceous hair follicles) become clogged with oil and the cells of sloughing skin. This is typically caused from overactive oil glands and/or uneven skin renewal. When pores clog, naturally occurring bacteria becomes trapped and multiplies. As the body detects the high levels of bacteria, an inflammatory response occurs sending white blood cells to the affected area. This causes the blemish to become red, swollen and tender. (A common misperception is that acne is caused by dirt. This is not true and in fact excessive washing and scrubbing can worsen the problem as it increases inflammation and swelling around the pore.)

Fortunately, there are several possible treatments. Prescribed by Dr. Seitz and Elizabeth Franklin FNPC, both oral and topical pharmaceuticals can effectively address overactive glands, bacteria, and inflammation. As adjunct or alternative treatments to prescriptive medications, patients can also turn to laser and light therapies. The Smoothbeam diode laser redefines the sebaceous gland’s structure and oil production. While the BLU-U Light eliminates excessive bacteria.

Once active blemishes disappear, a customized skin care program can help prevent future breakouts. Bellanova offers three professional skin care product lines and outstanding mineral makeup to help you maintain healthy, radiant skin.

Scars

While scarring results in a permanent change to your skin’s texture, the appearance can often be improved by reducing depth, softening edges and evening tones. Treatment depends on the type of scar and will be tailored to your specific condition.

The Affirm CO2 laser treats soft rolling scars frequently associated with acne or trauma. This ablative technique removes the outer layer of skin and as it heals, it re-forms with a more desirable texture. Some deep scars can be broken up with steroids to reduce size. Then pigmented areas are treated with the IPL system to improve overall tone. Superficial scarring can also be improved with lighter re-surfacing techniques such as microdermasion and chemical peels. Frequently, the best results are achieved by a combination of these various therapies.

Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin disease often referred to as "adult acne.” Frequently beginning as a tendency to flush easily, it can progress to persistent redness, swelling, small bumps, papules, tiny visible blood vessels, and may ultimately result in permanent thickening of the skin.

Dr. Seitz can prescribe a variety of treatments including antibiotics, steroids, retinoids, facial washes and creams. In some cases, the IPL or YAG laser is also beneficial in closing off dilated blood vessels.
